On 2 January 2012, the Wall Street Journal ’Korea Now‘ blog carried a short post on key Republican presidential candidates’ views regarding Korea.
It noted that there was a degree of disinterest in Korean affairs in the lead-up to the 2008 and suggests that it is again unlikely to be a major issue unless tension once increases substantially.

The Prime Minister has announced that South Korea will consider stationing soldiers on Dokdo, in reaction to Japan’s reassertion of its sovereignty over the island territory, currently occupied by Korea. The Prime Minister announced the government would review the deployment of troops as a long-term strategy in reaction to Japan’s authorization of a dozen school textbooks, which reassert the Japanese claim. On 23 March 2011, the Presidential Secretary for National Security Strategy, Kim Tae-Hyo, announced that South Korean NGOs will be able to resume humanitarian aid for North Korean infants in April 2011, while rice and corn shipments will be considered only if North Korea apologizes for the Cheonan and Yeonpyeong Island incidents.
