On 1 November 2011, President Lee Myung-bak arrived in St. Petersburg for summit talks with Russian Federation President, Dmitry Medvedev. On the agenda is North Korea’s nuclear program; bilateral economic cooperation; and the proposed natural gas pipeline project to transport Russian natural gas from Siberia to South Korea via Vladivostok and North Korea. President Lee Myung-Bak is this week due to sign off on the appointment of Kim Joong Kyum as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Korea Electrical Power Corporation (KEPCO). The appointment comes amidst substantial criticism of the country’s electricity power suppliers following the widespread power disruptions on 15 September 2011. Read more

On 19 September 2011, in his bi-weekly radio address, President Lee Myung-Bak announced that the government would invest USD90 million in stem cell research during 2012 with the aim of developing the industry into a new economic “growth engine”. Read more
On 13 September 2011, the White House announced the President Obama would receive President Lee Myung-bak and his wife on 13 October 2011 for a state visit. Authorities have been instructed to avoid inflaming tensions during the ongoing demonstrations at Gangjeong, Seogwipo Municipality. The current demonstrations, seeking a halt to the construction of a planned ROKN base, have to date attracted only limited public support. Read more

On 30 August 2011, a minor cabinet reshuffle replaced Unification Minister Hyun In-Taek with former Chief-of-Staff and Ambassador to China, Yu Woo-Ik. Domestic media has reported this as signalling a change in North Korea policy. Read more
