On 31 March 2011, it was announced that President Lee Myung-bak would hold a press conference on 1 April 2011, to express his position on the government’s decision to abort the proposed south-eastern region airport construction project. There has been strong political and public criticism of the decision to abort the project, which now adds to a growing list of major construction project projects that have proven politically difficult, including the Four-River development and the Sejong City plans. Park Geun-Hye, the front-runner for next year’s presidential election and former head of the Grand National Party (GNP) has expressed her support for the south-eastern region airport construction project. Park has stated her desire for further research to be undertaken to determine the both the feasibility of the project and indicated that the project may be a component of her presidential campaign. The USD9 billion south-eastern region airport construction project will likely be a recurring political issue with supporters already planning demonstrations and political action.
